In addition to familiarity between players and coaches, fans can always expect games in this rivalry to be played in packed stadiums. Needless to say, the Pats-Jets rivalry would never be the same after that. When Carroll was fired after three seasons, the Patriots hired Belichick, who was still the defensive coordinator for the Jets. ![]() Meanwhile, Pete Carroll, who had spent one year as the Jets head coach, was hired to replace Parcells in New England. One of the New England assistants he took with him was Bill Belichick. Things started to heat up after the 1996 season when Bill Parcells left the Patriots to become head coach of the Jets. The inter-mingling between the Pats and Jets over the years is perhaps notable than any other rivalry in the NFL. ![]() However, given the familiarity between these teams from two annual meetings and the vast collection of players and coaches who have been on both sides, there is no shortage of animosity in this rivalry. Granted, the rivalry has been a little one-sided in New England’s favor for most of the 21st century. After all, teams from New York and Boston are always bitter rivals, no matter the sport. Every team in the NFL likes to believe that the New England Patriots are their rival, but the New York Jets are one of the few teams that have a bonafide rivalry with the Pats.
